Drip, Drip, Drip

Nowadays, we are starting to have more days with rain than days without. The good news is that the shed is now water-tight.

The house, however, has sprung a leak.

On the shed, Coby and I painstakingly avoided leaving any nail heads exposed between the shingles. Every roofing nail was hand-nailed to the deck one lap at a time. We cut the shingles to stagger them according to the manufacturer’s instructions; we put flashing down and underlayment overlapped generously and attached to the plywood with cap nails (also by hand).

The roof of the house, however, was put on by professionals. It has leaked several times over the years and it is currently leaking again. It’s not a lot of water, but it is infuriating and troubling.

The culprit appears to be related to the vents. The bottom edges are exposed and they are stapled to the roof right through the face of the shingles beneath.

Those staples are rusty now and my hypothesis is that they may be the cause of the problem. However, it is a little difficult to be sure. I feel like I need to bring a hose or a bucket up on the roof and pour it over the shingles in a targeted way to see if I can cause the leak intentionally.

As a first step, I cleaned the pine needles from around the vents and the last time we had a downpour, there was very little leakage. I am on a quest though to create a solution that will last for maybe the next five years or so before we start looking at replacing the roof.
