One of the knowns about this house is that the energy bill is high. Too high for 2,000 square feet. There is no gas hook up here. Only electric. When the kids lived here, their PGE bill pushed $500 a month in the winter. Way too high for them to afford to live here and too high for Tygh and I to stomach. Tygh has monitored our energy use every single day since we moved in. We have only turned the heat on in the old part of the house when we were having guests over or it was just too cold to bear. And only for a few hours at a pop. We decided to start a fire last week on a cold, clear day.
It was beautiful and warm and oh so nice for a few hours.
It got us thinking about trying to utilize the fireplace to help heat the old part of the house.
Option include a wood stove insert for the fireplace, adding a gas hook up and converting to a gas fireplace or simply having the fireplace cleaned and repaired and using it during the winter months on a daily basis.
