This picture was taken on my cell phone at maximum zoom, but it is a red breasted sapsucker. At first, I thought it was a largeish downy woodpecker, but those males only have a shock of red at the back of their heads. They are also more than a little smaller. Once I got close enough, I could see that his one had red all over its head and face as well as on its breast.
There are a number of elderly trees in and around our yard that are providing attractive habitat for woodpeckers. I guess that’s one more thing to love about this place.
