So I put the greenhouse together, and it was still December. I mean, it’s a nice place to start our seeds, but it still gets cold in there. Just for fun, I planted a few herbs, some green shallots, carrots and chives to see what might come up.
Within a week or two, I started to see dill and what I believe to be the carrots poking out of the ground. This is an exciting development. If I can start seeds earlier, it’ll give us a jump on spring without having to pay the cost of running compact fluorescent lighting while taking up a bunch of garage space.
Obviously, some seeds need things to be a little warmer before they sprout, but it has been a mild winter so far and I am hopeful that we will be able to start growing things in earnest very soon.
For now, I am going to try to focus on things you can plant in the fall and see what works in the winter and what doesn’t.
