One of the amusing quirks of this old home is the intercom system. When my family bought this place many years ago, the house was pretty small by today’s standards. About 1200 square feet total. For a kid who had lived most of her life in apartments (and for a few years, a motel room!), it was a castle. The three bedrooms are right next to each other. You can sneeze and the person in the next bedroom will reply bless you.

So, the fact that there was a functioning intercom system here has always made me chuckle. A person coming to the front door could shout and be heard anywhere inside the place. There was no family room. The front door opened to the main living room where we spent most of our time. Because of that, the intercom system was never used much. And it amuses me that my mom never had it taken out. There is one in each bedroom and one right next to the doorbell.

We are getting ready to paint the old bedrooms and will probably take these out and patch the drywall before repainting. The one at the front door is another story. I’m not sure what to do about the hole that will be left there since we don’t have any siding to match. I guess we will cross that bridge later.
