These Are A Few of My Favorite Things

Mom’s Nelly Moser

My mom planted a Nelly Moser Clematis at the base of our fence probably 25-30 years ago. The base of the vine itself is about 2-3 inches in diameter. Big. It didn’t bloom at all last year. This year she has 12 buds! Her first bloom opened up on April 29th. So excited to have this girl back. I did buy a new Nelly Moser vine and planted it about a foot from the original and she’s growing well. I hope to keep mom’s legacy plant going as well.

Foxgloves Getting Ready for The Spotlight

I transplanted Foxglove starts from the blueberry bed last spring. They had taken over. I must have planted 20 or so of them here in this sort of no-man’s land we had fenced off to keep Trev from barking ferociously at the neighbor’s dog, Danny.

Look at them a year later! They like this spot and are about to strut their stuff.

Dogwood

Shelling Peas, Radish and Spinach

This bed is filled with cool season veggies. Peas, spinach and radish are coming along nicely.

Cosmos and Zinnias Hardening Off

We have flats and flats of Cosmos and Zinnia we started from seed. They’ve been moved outside the greenhouse to harden off. I’m hoping to get them planted this weekend. Then, we move the veggie starts out to harden off and will get them planted in another week or so.

Goldflame Honeysuckle

We planted 2 Goldflame Honeysuckle in April. I tried to propagate starts from our neighbor’s honeysuckle but failed miserably. Too impatient to start over, I bought 2 plants at the nursery and they seem happy with their new home.

Smokebush

We had a Smokebush at our home in Beaverton that we grew in a container. I love the color of the foliage on this shrub. We planted one here last year and it’s just put out new leaves this spring. Yep, didn’t make a mistake here. I feel happy looking at this smart shrub every time I look out the window.

So many other things happening in the yard….lilacs have been blooming for a week or so. I moved lilac suckers to an empty spot behind the swing set. I hope they do well there. The only failure so far is a Black and Blue Salvia I purchased last year. I loved that plant. Salvia’s are notoriously fickle and may or may not come back the following year. Mine didn’t. I checked each day for signs of life on that thing for a month. I’ve given up now and have started to plan what to put in its place!
