If you are going to grow things, you need pollinators. We eventually want to raise honey bees, but we haven’t had time to set that up yet. Creating a little mason bee house was really no trouble at all though.
As soon as the neighbor’s cherry trees started blooming, I put the house up over the small garden bed and put the packet of cocoons on a little shelf I fashioned beneath the house. A couple of weeks later, I couldn’t tell if they had hatched or not.
When I checked on them, I got up on a ladder and tried to determine the status of the bees. A few minutes later, they were literally bouncing off of my head, so I climbed back down and have just left them alone.
I see them around from time to time nowadays. They keep to themselves, pollinating trees and spackling over their tubes that contain the next generation.
