We bought this tree for Jillian for Mother’s Day two years ago when she and Chris were living in this home.
The birch tree that had presided over so many outdoor family gatherings for 40 years was dying. It shaded the patio and kept mom’s beloved fuchsias and other shade loving patio plants sheltered and happy. My mother had a garden swing with an awning on the patio near the birch where so many of us sat and chatted with her over the years. The tree knew many secrets and family stories.
Jill loved the Honey Locust we had in our yard in Tigard fifteen years ago. It was a mature tree and provided shade for our deck. The small leaves of the tree filtered the sun well and small branches and leaves worked their way through the top of the semi-covered deck.
So, when the birch died, we planted this in its place. I don’t think our Honey Locust in Tigard was a Sunburst. I don’t remember it turning the beautiful colors that this one is sporting.
I hope that it grows and flourishes here and will, too, be the silent keeper of many family stories to come as we build a life here.
Nina has made a little spot for herself in the dirt at the base of this tree. It makes me happy that she finds these places where she can dig in.
